In de IT wereld kan het soms toch vreemd lopen. 15 jaar geleden heeft Ray Ozzie het product Lotus Notes bedacht, hij is dus in feite 'de vader van de data replicatie'. Zo'n 5 jaar geleden verliet hij IBM/Lotus om een nieuw bedrijf te starten onder de naam Groove Networks. Sinds een paar dagen is bekend dat Groove is overgenomen door Microsoft waardoor Ray Ozzie ineens aan Bill Gates zal rapporteren in plaats van aan iemand binnen IBM.

Heel kort door de bocht is Groove een enterprise peer 2 peer oplossing waarbinnen complete virtuele werkomgevingen gerepliceerd kunnen worden tussen de peers (collega's, klanten, businesspartners etc.). Denk hierbij aan het delen van documenten, agenda's. Daarbij heb je, binnen Groove, ook de beschikking over collaborative tools zoals whiteboarding, instant messaging en zelfs voice chat. En dat allemaal in een gedistribueerd model dat zelf offline functionaliteit blijft bieden (mutaties worden achteraf gesynchroniseerd naar alle peers)!

Niet zo lang geleden is er aan Groove functionaliteit toegevoegd om Microsoft Sharepoint Services Sites offline mee te kunnen nemen (repliceren) op bijvoorbeeld je laptop. En dat is zeer waarschijnlijk de reden dat Microsoft Groove heeft overgenomen. De intensie is dat Groove een onderdeel wordt van de Office suite.

Siemens heeft een studie gedaan naar de (negatieve) effecten van de hoeveelheid communicatiemogelijkheden die een werknemer momenteel heeft. Onder communicatiemogelijkheden wordt onder andere verstaan: e-mail, de diverse telefoons die je ter beschikking hebt, PDA's, Instant messaging, intranetten, websites, weblogs etc. etc. Het telt allemaal al snel aardig op.

Een aantal cijfers

• Must leave multiple messages in different places when seeking immediate responses (67percent)
• Delayed decisions because colleagues fail to respond in a timely manner (65 percent)
• Inability to locate or communicate with colleagues (59 percent)
• Malfunctions while traveling or working remotely (56 percent)
• Inability to access timely and accurate information (51 percent)
• Inability to respond to a missed client call in a timely manner (48 percent)
• Lack of synchronization among various communication tools (43 percent)

Microsoft heeft de Q4-2003 (second quarter FY 2004) cijfers bekend gemaakt. Hieronder twee alinea's uit het persbericht die mij aanspreken.

• Information Worker revenue grew 27% over the prior year, as customers took advantage of the compelling value in the new Office System collaboration and productivity tools. Strong adoption of Office 2003 by consumers and small businesses drove sales in the retail and system builder channels to surpass expectations. Customers acquiring Office during the quarter included Eli Lilly and Company, Safeco Corporation, and Ticketmaster.
• Home and Entertainment had a solid quarter driven by sales of Xbox games and consoles. With over 400 games available, including 70 Live-enabled games, Xbox grew its U.S. cumulative game attach rate to 6.4, according to NPD Data. Since the launch of Xbox in 2001, Microsoft has sold over 13.7 million Xbox consoles worldwide and is on track to have sold 14.5 to 16.0 million consoles by the end of this fiscal year. In addition, Xbox Live™ momentum continued with subscribers growing to nearly 750,000, keeping the business on target to have one million subscribers by the end of the fiscal year.
