In bezit van Exchange mail en een Nokia telefoon? Wellicht is deze software van Nokia iets voor je. Mail for Exchange is een stukje software op de Nokia die kan 'activesyncen' met de Exchange omgeving. Sinds gisteren is van dat stukje software versie 2.0 beschikbaar. Geschikt voor de volgende producten:

• Exchange Server 2003, SP1 and SP2 (ActiveSync protocol versions 2.0, 2.1 and 2.5)
• Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003 SP1 and R2
• Exchange Server 2007
• Nokia E50, Nokia E60, Nokia E61, Nokia E61i, Nokia E65, Nokia E70, Nokia E90 Communicator, Nokia N73, Nokia N76, Nokia N80, and Nokia N95

Een tijdje terug heeft e-office samen met Telfort een softlaunch gedaan van hosted BlackBerry dat wij verkopen onder het label AirPIM. Hosted BlackBderry is een concept waarbij de eindgebruiker met minimale investeringen 'echte' corporate e-mail met BlackBerry functionaliteit krijgt. In ons geval praten we over een Exchange 2003 SP2 omgeving (dus Windows Mobile push wordt ook meteen ondersteund) aangevuld met een BlackBerry Enterprise Server. Naast de mailbox moet de gebruiker uiteraard een BlackBerry device en bijbehorend abonnement aanschaffen.

Onlangs werd ik door het blad winmag geinterviewd over ons AirPIM product, uiteindelijk blijkt dat het artikel een vergelijking is geworden tussen een aantal hosted mobile mail oplossingen. Wat blijkt we komen als beste oplossing uit de bus voor bedrijven! De particulieren zullen volgens het blad zich beter thuisvoelen met een HP iPaq 6915 en de hosting van IS. Gek genoeg wordt bij IS geen gebruik gemaakt van push maar van een polling interval van 5 minuten. De batterij van de iPaq zal ongetwijfeld het einde van de dag niet halen met deze instelling.

De patch voor Microsoft Exchange die wellicht uw BlackBerry infrastructuur deels onbruikbaar maakt wordt volgens RIM vandaag uitgerold. Lees de onderstaande artikelen goed door als u gebruik maakt van BlackBerry of Good servers in combinatie met Exchange 2000 of 2003.

Microsoft heeft de rechten van Exchange accounts met 'Send As' permissies aangepast. Deze aanpassing zal in toekomstige service packs worden verspreid. De aanpassing is van toepassing op Exchange 2000 en 2003. Mobile middleware producten zoals BlackBerry Enterprise Server en Good maken gebruik van deze rechten om e-mail uit naam van een mobiele gebruiker te versturen. Als deze patch wordt uitgerold kunnen mobiele gebruikers alleen nog maar mail ontvangen maar niet meer versturen. Na uitrol van de patch moeten de rechten alsnog handmatig worden aangepast om e.e.a. weer goed te laten functioneren.

Altijd stoer als je (lees e-office) echt iets nieuws hebt te melden. Het toch altijd wel erg up-to-date weblog BlackBerrycool.com schrijft vandaag pas over dit probleem.

Om vanuit Microsoft Exchange 2003 nieuwe mail direct te kunnen pushen naar een Windows Mobile device heb je een specifiek service pack nodig dat vandaag is gereleased. In het service pack zijn naast mobiele verbeteringen tevens verbeteringen te vinden op het vlak van anti-spam en mailbox. Twee belangrijke zaken die vervolgens nog moet zien te bemachtigen zijn een Windows Mobile 5.0 device en Windows Mobile 5.0 Messaging en Security feature pack. Dat laatste item op je boodschappenlijst wordt nog het meest lastig. Op deze pagina kan je rechtsonderin lezen dat devices en upgrades pas 'next calendar year' via device makers en mobile operators beschikbaar komen :-(

Zie ik ineens op de website van T-Mobile de MDAPro staan. Het paradepaardje van HTC en T-Mobile. Naast een uitklapbaar QWERTY toetsenbord (wat wel haast standaard lijkt te worden voor connected devices) heeft dit apparaat ook UMTS! Jammer dat T-Mobile Nederland alleen maar GPRS en Hot Spots kan leveren, anders zou het in combinatie met Exchange 2003 SP2 toch een mooie combi zijn.

Wil je het device nu kopen?? Toch nog even geduld hebben (ik had je gewaarschuwd), je kan je via deze pagina laten notificeren zodra het device beschikbaar is.

Op de website van het Microsoft Exchange team is een heel interessant artikel te lezen over het ontstaan en de werking van het push mechanisme in Microsoft Exchange 2003 SP2. Hieronder een korte beschrijving van push mechanisme.

• The device issues an HTTP request to Exchange, which asks Exchange to report any changes that occur in the mailbox of the requesting user within a specified time limit.  The URL of this HTTP request is the same as that of other AirSync commands ("/Microsoft-Server-ActiveSync") with some differing query string parameters.  The body of the HTTP request allows the client to specify those folders that Exchange should monitor for changes.  Typically, these will be the Inbox, Calendar, Contacts, and Tasks folders.
• Upon receiving this request, Exchange will monitor the specified folders until either the time limit expires or a change (such as the arrival of a piece of email) occurs in one of those folders, whichever comes first.  Exchange will then issue a response to this request that notes in which folders the changes occurred.  Of course, this will be empty if the time limit elapsed before any changes occurred.
• Upon receiving an empty response, the device simply re-issues the request.  This loop of issuing a request for change notifications, receiving an empty response, and re-issuing the request for change notifications is called "the heartbeat."
• Upon receiving a non-empty response, the device issues a synchronization request against each folder in the response.  When those complete, it re-issues the request for change notifications.

Het hoge woord is eruit, er komt een service pack voor Microsoft Exchange 2003 waardoor het mogelijk wordt mail/agenda/contacten en taken wireless (pushed) te kunnen synchroniseren met een Windows Mobile 5.0 device. De aanval op BlackBerry is dus ingezet. De voorwaarden voor dit alles: een Exchange 2003 server, aangevuld met service pack 2 en een device waarop Windows Mobile 2005 draait. De volgende features worden ondersteund met deze productcombinatie:

• push van mail/agenda/contacten/taken
• over the air lookup van de Global Address List
• IT policy enforcement
• local en remote device wipe (a.k.a. kill pill)
• authenticatie op basis van certificaten
• data compressie
• en natuurlijk geen additionele server & software nodig

In februari heeft Nokia een licentie genomen op activesync technologie van Microsoft. Uit de persberichten is niet de filteren of een Nokia daarmee dezelfde features kan/zal bevatten als een toestel waar Windows Mobile 5.0 op draait. De footprint van Microsoft in de telefoniemarkt is (nu nog) beperkt. Echter, de combinatie van deze twee powerhouses (Nokia en Microsoft) zal RIM ongetwijfeld de nodige wakkere nachtjes opleveren.

Een leuke creatieve dienst waarbij weblog gerelateerde techniek wordt toegepast in een andere context: je agenda beschikbaar stellen via RSS (xml gebaseerde) feeds.

De oplossing staat helaas nog los van je corporate agenda in Domino of Exchange maar het brengt me wel op ideetjes. Klik op het logo voor deze online dienst.

Het bedrijfje Lookout Software is onlangs opgekocht door Microsoft. Lookout heeft namelijk een uitermate handige full-text index plugin ontwikkeld voor Outlook. Het werkt absoluut razendsnel en is vanuit Outlook via een extra search bar onder je standaard menu's te benaderen. Hier kan je hem downloaden.

Het bedrijf SCALIX denkt iets totaal nieuws ontwikkeld te hebben: een messaging platform op UNIX. Geen idee waarom een bedrijf hiervoor zou kiezen als er al voldoende en vooral ook bruikbare producten beschikbaar zijn. Enige nieuwe 'noviteit' is de integratie met de BlackBerry Enterprise Server die standaard beschikbaar is. Ik volg het geloof ik niet meer helemaal... Anyway, mocht je er toch nog iets van willen weten, follow me...

Microsoft heeft de Q4-2003 (second quarter FY 2004) cijfers bekend gemaakt. Hieronder twee alinea's uit het persbericht die mij aanspreken.

• Information Worker revenue grew 27% over the prior year, as customers took advantage of the compelling value in the new Office System collaboration and productivity tools. Strong adoption of Office 2003 by consumers and small businesses drove sales in the retail and system builder channels to surpass expectations. Customers acquiring Office during the quarter included Eli Lilly and Company, Safeco Corporation, and Ticketmaster.
• Home and Entertainment had a solid quarter driven by sales of Xbox games and consoles. With over 400 games available, including 70 Live-enabled games, Xbox grew its U.S. cumulative game attach rate to 6.4, according to NPD Data. Since the launch of Xbox in 2001, Microsoft has sold over 13.7 million Xbox consoles worldwide and is on track to have sold 14.5 to 16.0 million consoles by the end of this fiscal year. In addition, Xbox Live™ momentum continued with subscribers growing to nearly 750,000, keeping the business on target to have one million subscribers by the end of the fiscal year.

Als RIM niet oppast wordt hun pushed e-mail technologie nog eens een wereld standaard (als dat uberhaubt mogelijk is in de ICT wereld). Nokia komt binnenkort al uit met een Blackberry enabled telefoon, 18 december tekende Palm een contract met RIM en net voor de kerst heeft ook Sony Ericsson getekend voor de RIM technologie.

Het doorgaans pro PocketPC en pro Smartphone georienteerde MSMobiles.com schrijft over de push technologie van Exchange 2003 in combinatie met Windows Mobile 2003. Wat is het geval: er is niet echt sprake van push, er wordt namelijk door de server een SMS berichtje naar de handheld gepushed die vervolgens het e-mail bericht pulled.

Als je veel mail ontvangt worden er dus ook veel SMS'jes verstuurd wat uiteindelijk dus een dure grap kan worden. Nou kan dat in de praktijk nog wel meevallen. De SMS berichten worden namelijk naar een SMTP adres gestuurd en in Amerika zijn dat soort SMS berichten gratis. Nou is natuurlijk de vraag hoe dat in Europa zit, eerlijk gezegd weet ik het niet. Ga ik navragen.
