De meeste smartphones worden gebaseerd op twee formfactors. Je komt ze tegen in de vorm van het 'BlackBerry model' met het liggende scherm en het full qwerty toetsenbord en het iPhone model met het grote aanraakscherm, al dan niet aangevuld met een slider keyboard. Daarnaast is een camera, uitbreidbaar geheugen en GPS ondertussen ook wel gemeengoed. Je kan dus stellen dat het grootste onderscheid wordt gemaakt op het scherm. Dat is het terrein van 'The Astonishing Tribe'. Hieronder een zeer mooi voorbeeld van een aantrekkelijke interface uit de keuken van deze Zweden. Op mobiliyz lees ik dat in eerste instantie deze interface commercieel beschikbaar gesteld zou worden via de Android Market. Achteraf blijkt dat deze user interface alleen aan providers en hardware fabrikanten geleverd gaat worden. Jammer!

De meest populaire toepassingen voor op de smartphone zijn vaak extensies op sociale netwerken als Facebook, Hyves, FourSquare, Twitter etc. Vaak zijn dergelijke toepassingen ook nog eens gekoppeld aan functionaliteit op je smartphone, denk aan de GPS locatie, adresboek en SD kaartje. Op je smartphone staat vaak ook nog eens meer gevoelige (zakelijke) informatie zoals email, documenten en SMS berichten. Kortom, een combinatie van zaken die potentieel problemen kan gaan opleveren. Gelukkig hebben we dan de ENISA (kende ze ook niet maar dat is de European Network and Information Security Agency). Deze organisatie heeft een lijst van 17 'golden rules' opgesteld over hoe om te gaan met mobile social networks. Het is even te veel om ze hier allemaal op te sommen maar hieronder de categorieen waaronder je deze 17 tips & tricks kunt rangschikken:

• pay attention to what you post and upload
• choose your friends with care
• protect your work environment and avoid reputation risk
• protect your mobile phone and the information saved on it from any physical intrusion
• respect other people's privacy
• inform yourself
• protect your privacy with the privacy settings
• report immediately lost or stolen mobile
• pat attention to the location based services and information of your mobile phone. 
  

Slechts 10% van alle Fortune 2000 bedrijven maakt gebruik van mobiele applicaties om hun klanten te binden. Onderstaande grafiek is de geschatte groei van het aantal smartphone gebruikers wereldwijd. Kortom: een prettig vooruitzicht!

Al een tijdje terug blogde ik en Roel Martens van Mobilyz ik over de hosted 'Google BlackBerry Enterprise Server van e-office. Deze week heeft Google de 2.0 versie van de Google Connector for BlackBerry gelanceerd. Uiteraard is onze hosted omgeving hiermee geupdate. Het grootste voordeel van deze nieuwe versie is de mobiele ondersteuning van de Google Calender. Deze werkt nu bi-directioneel. Met andere woorden, je kan dus nu afspraken plannen zoals het bedoeld is.

Het bedrijf TAT (afkorting van de ubercoole bedrijfsnaam The Astonishing Tribe) is gespecialiseerd in het ontwerpen van user interfaces. Met de komst van miniprojectors (soms zelfs in camera's) ontstaan er weer hele nieuwe mogelijkheden om met (de informatie op) je smartphone te interacteren.

Er is deze week een geheel nieuw design van een BlackBerry smartphone gelekt via de blogosphere. Dit keer zet RIM in op de combinatie van touchscreen en qwerty keyboard. Dat kan een mooie combi zijn als het toestel niet te dik en te zwaar wordt. Afgaande van onderstaande foto's is het toestel een fractie dikker dan een BlackBerry Curve 8900. Hopelijk hebben ze met het gewicht ook iets slims kunnen doen want naar mijn persoonlijke mening is de BlackBerry Storm (net als zoveel andere full screen devices) te zwaar. Gewicht is ook een belangrijke factor in de balans van het toestel. Met een uitgeschoven toetsenbord moet de telefoon niet topzwaar worden.

Eigenlijk wel een hele slimme move van RIM, die BES Express licentievorm. Het is een kwalitatief goede en goedkope oplossing om een MKB Exchange gebruiker aan de BlackBerry te krijgen. Een BIS abonnement kost tegenwoordig niet zoveel meer. Als je dan ook al niets hoeft te betalen voor de software (waarmee je dan wel je Exchange mail/calendar/contacts/tasks wireless kunt synchroniseren) dan begint het wel een heel interessante propositie te worden. Hieronder een overzicht van alle zaken die je op het toestel kunt afdwingen vanaf een BES Express machine. BES Express software kan je op de Exchange server installeren (bij meer dan 75 gebruikers een dedicated machine inzetten!).

Uit de categorie nutteloos maar leuk om te weten. Mail onderstaande 'tekst' naar jezelf en copy/paste die vervolgens weer op je BlackBerry in een BlackBerry Messenger chatsessie. Dan krijg je ineens een hele set nieuwe emoticons te zien. Mocht je een icon willen hergebruiken, maak dan een Autotext item door een icon te copy/pasten. Icons kan je ook toevoegen aan je eigen BlackBerry profiel. Tip: niet als eerste karakter gebruiken want dan ben je alfabetisch niet meer vindbaar.

Geen mooiere reclame dan mond tot mond reclame. Toine Klok, directeur Business Partner Organisatie (BPO) van KPN, heeft mooie woorden over e-office in CRN: "...zo'n partij is onafhankelijk en biedt toegevoegde waarde met de integratie van mobiele oplossingen..."

Gartner heeft de zaken weer eens op een rijtje gezet. Eigenlijk zijn er weinig verrassingen te melden over 2009. Apple, RIM en Google snoepen nog steeds markt af van de gevestigde orde. Nokia blijft een powerhouse als het gaat om hoeveelheid shipments. Windows Mobile, voorheen nog het klassieke voorbeeld van het mobiele OS voor applicaties heeft plaats moeten maken voor Apple/iPhone. Logisch: er is geen enkele iPhone gebruiker die geen apps draait om zijn handheld. Ik ben erg benieuwd hoe onderstaande cijfers er over een jaar uit zien. Windows Phone 7 is vorige week op het Mobile World Congres in Barcelona aangekondigd en heeft wat mij betreft potentie. De vraag is echter hoe ver ze de komende maanden in de achterhoede worden gedrukt. De verwachting is namelijk dat de eerste Windows Phone toestellen pas eind dit jaar op de markt gaan komen. De insteek daarbij is vooral de consumer markt als eerste te veroveren laat dat nou net het terrein zijn waar BlackBerry momenteel veel markt pakt.

Ha daar zijn ze weer, de shipment cijfertjes. Ten opzichte van vorig jaar hebben we ondanks de crisis toch nog een groei gezien van 30%. In het totaal zijn er 53 miljoen handsets verkocht in Q4 2009! Komt vast ook vanwege de feestdagen maar dan nog. Prima score. Opvallend is uiteraard Apple die zomaar zijn shipments bijna verdubbeld in een jaar tijd.

Dacht je de [hack]dans te kunnen ontspringen door in plaats van te bellen over GSM gebruik te maken van bellen over een 3G verbindingen dan heb je dat sinds gisteren ook mis. Een groep Israelische wiskundigen heeft het A5/3 encryptie algorithme weten te kraken. Vreemd genoeg weten de onderzoekers dit sterkere encryptie A5/3 algorithme 3000 keer sneller te kraken dan het nog oudere A5/1 algorithme. Komt door een nieuwere aanvalsmethodiek met de naam Sandwitch Attack. Had ik al een keer wat geschreven over Cellcrypt?

Stel, je bent in de markt voor een nieuwe smartphone, wat zou je dan kopen? Dit onderzoekje heeft de organisatie Changewave onlangs bij Amerikaanse consumenten uitgevoerd. De usual suspects als iPhone en BlackBerry komen bij deze vraag uiteraard goed uit de verf, opvallend is wel de enorme boost die het Android platform heeft gekregen. Dat heeft alles te maken met het feit dat dit gewoon een degelijk platform is (vooral voor consumenten), de toestellen er goed uit zien en de naam Google erop staat. De lancering van de Nexus One enkele dagen geleden en de buzz die daaraan vooraf ging helpt uiteraard ook aardig mee. Hieronder de cijfertjes:

Tja, hoe doe je dat. Een Powerpoint presentatie geven vanaf je BlackBerry. Al een tijd lang heeft de fabrikant Impatica hiervoor een oplossing. RIM, de fabrikant van de BlackBerry heeft nu ook een eigen oplossing ontwikkeld. Het is een kastje dat via Bluetooth is verbonden met je handheld en via een VGA koppeling aangesloten kan worden aan beeldscherm of beamer. Daarna is het gewoon de presentatie opstarten en de rest gaat vanzelf. Aardig is dat je op de BlackBerry ook de speakernotes te zien krijgt. Kan je spieken tijdens je presentatie. Gaat ca 199 euro kosten.

Stel dat:

• je gebruik maakt van Google Apps (mail, agenda, etc.)
• en je een BlackBerry wilt gebruiken zoals een BlackBerry bedoeld is in combinatie met Google Apps

Dan heeft e-office een heel mooi product  in de aanbieding. Voor 5 euro per user per maand (plus de kosten voor je BlackBerry BES abonnement) kan je je Google Apps omgeving mobilizeren naar je BlackBerry smartphone. Uiteraard bieden we deze dienst (net zoals Google Apps) online aan, investering in hardware, softwarelicenties etc is niet nodig, alles is verwerkt in het maandelijkse bedrag, zelfs de helpdesk. Roel Martens van mobilyz.com heeft dit product in gebruikt en heeft onlangs een review geschreven. 

Het komt niet vaak voor dat de introductie van een telefoon het journaal haalt. Als ik mij niet vergis kreeg alleen de iPhone dit soort aandacht. Gisteren was het dus d-day voor de Nexus One. De Android 2.1 telefoon die exclusief door HTC voor Google ontwikkeld is (waarschijnlijk als een voorbode van een nieuwe generatie Android toestellen). In het buitenland zal het toestel via onder andere de telecom providers verkocht worden maar voorzover nu bekend zal de Nexus One in Nederland alleen online via de Google website verkregen kunnen worden. Da's een interessante stap want het enige stukje hardware dat ze hiervoor verkochten was een search appliance. De specs van de Nexus One zien er in ieder geval goed uit. Een 5 megapixel camera bijvoorbeeld, een extra microfoon voor noise cancellation, en MULTI TASKING! Er zijn dus wel een paar features die het Apple heel erg lastig kunnen maken.

Factsheet over kwetsbare communicatie met gsm (versie 1.0, 31 december 2009)
In 2009 is de vertrouwelijkheid van gesprekken en sms-berichten met mobiele telefoons verder in gevaar gekomen. Volgens de laatste gepubliceerde onderzoeken blijkt dat er een reële mogelijkheid is dat vertrouwelijke gesprekken kunnen worden afgeluisterd. Ook voor sms-authenticatiediensten zijn de risico's toegenomen. GOVCERT.NL zet in deze factsheet de verschillende zwakheden op een rij. Er wordt ondermeer aanbevolen om -waar mogelijk- UMTS te gebruiken in plaats van GSM.
